Cartoonists Across America and the World was founded by artist and activist Phil Yeh in 1985 after he interviewed Wally "Famous" Amos on the subject of the American literacy crisis for Phil's newspaper Uncle Jam. Wally explained how many people in this world could not read or write, and Phil pledged to tour the world to try and use cartoons and humor and ALL THE ARTS to interest people of all ages into reading and writing. The original plan was for a 15 year tour but in 1999 when Phil and actor Edward James Olmos were honored at Sony Studios by the Los Angeles County Library Foundation for their work for education with the first ever Alphie Awards, Phil shocked his family and friends with the annoucement that the tour would be extended until 2010, or 25 years of his life!

Steve Allen hosted the ceremonies and Wally flew out to present Phil with his Alphie award, a 50lb bronze bookworm statue, that sits in Phil's studio, reminding him that he must be crazy to try and promote reading in a world where the vast majority prefer all things electronic. But Phil won't give up on his mission, and that is the reason that during 2008 to 2010 we are expanding the Winged Tiger World Tour as much as we can. This is a grassroots campaign that needs local help to book us for schools, libraries, conferences etc around the world. Since 1985, we have painted more than 1,700 murals in 49 states (Alaska we still need a booking!), Canada, The Cayman Islands, Taiwan, Singapore, China, Japan, France, England. The Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Mexico and Italy. Contact Phil directly. There are a little more than three years left of this great tour to promote the arts and literacy and creativity (boy! do we need more of that now.) and world peace and all sorts of positive issues that we have worked on with the enthusiastic help of some of the best artists on the planet.
